A Father's Story
When my first daughter was born, I was the happiest and proudest man in the world. Watching her grow, hearing the first sounds. Just amazing.
But when she turned two, my partner and I expected her to start talking. Instead, we heard only shy sounds - a soft "th", a few basic phonemes. No words. No sentences. Just silence.
I'm Italian. My partner is from South Africa. We live in the UK. From the day our daughter was born, I spoke to her only in Italian, while English was our household language. And in that silence, I started to blame myself. Maybe I was confusing her. Maybe I should stop speaking Italian altogether.
That thought broke my heart. Giving up my language meant giving up a piece of who I am - and cutting my daughter off from an entire side of her family, her heritage, her identity.
As a technologist, I refused to accept that. So I started building a solution. I applied for the Royal Academy of Engineering's Regional Talent Engine programme - and was selected for Cohort 6. Through the programme, I refined my idea, spoke with a variety of families and experts, and founded Lingo Starters.
Today, my daughter is starting to find her voice - in both languages. And I'm on a mission to make sure every multilingual family has the support they deserve.
